The Reconquista Quiz
It was one of the longest armed conflicts in human history. After Spain’s armies fell to a colonial invasion, the country spent centuries under the thumb of its enemies. This period is part of the reason why Spain has such a unique culture when compared with the rest of Western Europe.
The intermingling of foreign invaders with the country’s natives inspired a hodgepodge of foods, values, music, and architecture that still influence modern Spain’s cultural heritage. All of that is well and good, but the people of Spain suffered under the yoke of colonialism. People from all across the country found themselves victimized and pillaged by an empire that simply didn’t care about those it conquered. Fields were ravaged and people were enslaved by this invading entity.
Yet, during the entirety of this historic occupation, Spain’s people rebelled against their oppressors. Dramatic and grisly battles were fought over the relatively small Iberian Peninsula. Centuries would see the battlelines change along with the names of the commanders. Even so, the core of the conflict would remain fairly consistent. The Spanish people wanted their homes back.
In this quiz, we will discuss this historical period in broad strokes. Given that the Reconquista happened over about seven centuries, there is a vast amount of information to tackle on it. We will be most focusing on the military and political conflicts between the rebel Spanish and the occupying forces.
